Tamron announced an exciting new telephoto zoom lens this morning, the SP 150-600mm f/5 – 6.3 Di VC USD. Recent years have seen an increase in the popularity of zooms like this, including Tamron’s earlier 200-500mm model (still available for about $950) and Canon’s 200-400mm f4 1.4x zoom, as well as Sigma’s 50-500 and 150-500mm zooms.
The new Tamron bests all of its competition (the Canon doesn’t really count) by increasing its maximum focal length all the way to 600mm, while also extending the wide end to 150mm. The lens remains small and lightweight considering the zoom range, and includes Tamron’s image stabilization system, greatly reducing the chances of blur associated with movement of long lenses. At 68.8 oz (1,951 g), the Tamron lens only one pound heavier than Canon’s 70-200 f/2.8L IS II telephoto (52.6 oz./1490g).
The price and availability remain unknown.
