Tamron has long been known for producing high quality optics, and their 70-200 f/2.8 Di LD was no excpetion, and it’s reasonable price (only $) added to its appeal. Unfortunately, as lens technology has progressed over the past several years, its use of a slower micro motor and lack of image stabilization has left it behind the times.
Today, however, Tamron has announced an updated version of the lens with improved optics, a USD (ultra-sonic drive) motor, and VC (vibration control, ie, image stabilization), bringing it back to the forefront of aftermarket lens choices for budget-minded professionals and serious amateurs. At this time, pricing information is not yet available, but I’d expect it to be in the $1200 range.
Tamron’s well-respected 90mm Macro has also received an update. The new 90mm 1:1 macro will also feature a faster USD motor and VC to accompany its excellent optics and improved lens coatings. Again, pricing is not available. Both lenses are expected to start shipping before the end of 2012.
