This morning, Sony announced a new extra-wide standard zoom lens: the 20-70mm f/4 G, giving creators a significantly wider field of view and features optimized for hybrid video shooting in a compact, light-weight housing. At the same time, Sony announced the development of a 300mm f/2.8 GM telephoto lens that will be released in early 2024.
Sony’s new 20-70mm f/4 lens may lose a stop of light compared to its GM counterpart, but the ability to shoot at 20mm vs 24 will appeal to many photographers and video creators, and increasing ISO by a stop is less and less problematic with today’s low-noise sensors.
In addition to the increased range, the lens offers a pair of fast new XD linear motors for speedy, quiet focusing, a manual aperture ring (with de-click option), weather sealing, and an optical design that minimizes focus breathing and focuses down to 11.8 inches at the wide end (9.8″ at the telephoto end). And of course Sony says that it will have high, “G-series” image quality.
The lens will be available in March at a cost of only $1099 in the US, $1499 in Canada. Pre-orders start tomorrow at B&H. No significant details are available for the 300mm f/2.8 GM.
