Fuji Finepix X100 : On the Way?

The Fujifilm Finepixl X100 will be familiar to those of you who love your old rangefinders and have been looking for a digital that is compact and has simple, manual-style controls. Since it’s annoucement last September, the X100 has generated a flurry of interest on the internet, but the actual release of the camera has been delayed several times.

Now, 6 months later, there are indications that the camera is about to be released. As of today, B&H photo has announced that they are now taking pre-orders for the Fuji X100. This is certainly no guarantee of an imminent arrival, but because B&H is one of the largest camera suppliers in the USA and is in frequent contact with all of the manufacturers, I take this as a reasonably good indication.

At $1199 the camera is not cheap, but it is considerably less expensive than it’s rangefinder cousin, the Leica M9 ($6995).

  1. The more I read about it, the more excited I am about this camera! So many cool features (the live histogram in the viewfinder sounds great), and I just saw some test shots at ISO6400 that looked fantastic!

One disappointing thing I just read, though, was that Lightroom can’t read its RAW files… yet. That would be a major disadvantage, for me, if things stay that way.

Anyone have a guess how long it will take Adobe to address this? I haven’t had Lightroom very long, but my impression is that they don’t do minor software update patches that they give you for free like some other programs, but that you have to wait until they come out with the new big generation version of the software. Do you think those of us who use Lightroom will need to wait until Lightroom 4 to be able to work with RAW files from this new Fuji X100?

    1. Lightroom and ACR seem to get updates every few months. In December, for example, version 3.3 of Lightroom was released, which included the RAW support for the Nikon D7000, among others. I would guess that it won’t be long before Lightroom releases an update for cameras like the X100, assuming the X100 people have provided a stable format for them to support.

  2. This camera looks very promising. I read somewhere else that it even shoots 720p video, which is an absolute must-have feature for me in any camera, but a feature that the snooty folks at Leica apparently consider beneath them. I’ve been considering getting a new compact camera for a while now, and I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes out for reviews on this one when it comes out…
