We generally ignore “compact cameras” on this site, but the Ricoh GR III is a worthy exception. Announced today, the GR III is the latest in a line of APS-C sensor cameras with fixed lenses that are geared toward street photographers and other shooters who want quick, simple operation and excellent image quality from a small camera. And while many cameras promise these things, the Ricoh delivers. I’ve been reading about this line for nearly a decade and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything but praise for the image quality this camera produces; people talk about it with the sort of reverence that is usually reserved for Leicas.
The GRIII has a 24.2 megapixel sensor and top ISO of 102400, and a new 18.3mm (28mm equivalent) lens with image stabilization. Though the sensor does not have an anti-aliasing filter (AA filter, aka optical low-pass filter), the image stabilization can produce micro-vibrations to achieve the same result, when needed.
For some reason, the photos make it look like it’s been oiled up for a body-building competition, but I think that the real finish is more matte.
