We often think of the f/4 lenses in this range as being purchased by those who want the f/2.8s but can’t afford them, but the Tamron 70-210 f/4 Di VC USD announced this morning may be worth picking up for its own sake. This internal focusing, internal zooming lens is designed to be compact and lightweight, with four stops of image stabilization (Vibration Compensation), making this an excellent lens for travelers. A sturdy build with weather sealing and fluorine coated elements (for water resistance) make this a rugged option for work in the field.
The lens is only 6.8 inches long, and weighs less than two pounds. For comparison, Tamron’s 70-200 f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 weighs 3.3lbs, though is only about a half inch longer. The lens’s dual processors improve focus speed and accuracy along with improving the stabilization system.
It’s also worth noting that the lens has the best MOD (Minimum Object Distance) in its class, allowing photographers to use the lens as 1:3.1 macro lens.
