This morning, Sony announced a new ultra-wide full frame zoom lens: the FE 16-25mm F2.8 G. In the same mold as the recently announced 24-50 f/2.8, Sony’s new model aims to be compact and lightweight, offering a reduced zoom range and price (compared to their G Master counterparts) while maintaining first-rate image quality.
The size of the new lens is impressive: it’s just 2.94 inches long and weighs 14.3 ounces (409g)., with 67mm filter threads. Dual linear motors will support fast and nearly silent operation, and it has general dust and moisture sealing. For those who need close focusing, the lens can reach down to 7.1 inches (18 cm), providing a maximum magnification of 0.2x.
If you happen to own a Sony A9III, Sony also states that “…it supports high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking of up to 120 frames per second”.
At about $1200, the new 16-25mm f/2.8 lens will cost about half the price of the Sony 16-35 f/2.8 II G Master lens. Expect the Sony 16-25 to hit store shelves on May 10th, 2024, but as usual, the lens will be available shortly for pre-order from Adorama and (soon) from B&H Photo.
