After the excitement of the announcement last February of the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 OS ART series lens, the company went silent about the price and release date. Today, we finally have some news.
The Sigma lens is expected to start shipping at a price of $1299 this Friday, according to the B&H Photo website (this is not official and we’ll update it as better info becomes available). This is about the same as the Tamron equivalents, which currently run $1100 with rebates for the original Canon model and an anticipated $1299 for the new G2 model, and is significantly less expensive than the non-stabilized Canon and stabilized Nikon lenses, which cost $1,899.00 and $1,634.95, respectively. As we’ve shown in our comparison of the Tamron and Canon lenses, the excellent Tamron lens is not quite as sharp as the Canon, but Sigma ART series lenses have frequently out-performed their (usually older) Canon equivalents in terms of resolution, so it will be interesting to see whether the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 ART can give us the best of both worlds: image stabilization and super-sharp optics.
Also announced is the pricing of the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 ART lens, which will cost approximately $1599.
Our favorite retailers have started taking pre-orders for the lens, allowing you to secure your place in line for a lens that is likely to sell out frequently during its first few months of production. As usual, ordering from these links will support L&M with a commission, but it won’t cost you any extra.
