On1 Photo RAW Version 2017.5 Takes Big Step Forward

This morning, On1 announced several major upgrades to their popular Photo RAW software with version 2017.5. On1’s Photo RAW emerged last December as a strong competitor (or compliment) to Adobe Lightroom for serious hobbyists and professional photographers, boasting nearly instant thumbnail and preview generation, a quick, high-quality workflow, and RAW file processing, obviously.

Highlights of the new version include:

  • Lens Correction
  • Lightroom Migration Assistant
  • Details Pane (improved noise reduction and sharpening)
  • Non-Destructive Clone Stamp
  • Compare Mode
  • Improved Search
  • Preset Stacking & Improved Preset Management

The update also includes support for a variety of additional cameras (including the new Canon T7i and 77D, Fuji X100F, Pentax KP, and various phones and tablets), as well as numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements.

On1 will be hosting a LIVE EVENT tomorrow (June 8th, 2017) at 10:00AM Pacific to show off all of the new features and how to use them. Just click on the banner below (or the LIVE EVENT link, if the banner is blocked):

Lens Correction

Much like Lightroom and ACR, Lens Correction in On1 Photo RAW allows you to automatically correct distortion and color fringing in your images from most major lens manufacturers, including Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, and numerous others. Apparently it can’t correct a photographers inclination to shoot tacky HDR photos (see the video), but lens correction is otherwise quick and easy, with manual adjustments available as well:

Migrating From Lightroom

Regular readers of this site will know that I’ve recently decided to dump Adobe’s Photoshop in favor of Affinity Photo, and although I have no yet settled on On1 Photo RAW as a replacement for Lightroom, it is in the running with the much more expensive CaptureOne. If you are ready to switch from Lightroom to On1 Photo RAW, though, adopting On1’s Photo RAW 2017.5 just became much easier. Photo RAW’s “Migration Assistant” will allow you to import your photos, metadata, and collections directly from Lightroom directly into On1 PR. This video produced by On1 explains the process:
