Sony A7S Mark II, front with sensor

Sony Announces A7S II with 4K Video and ISO 409600

This morning, Sony announced their latest update to their blazing hot mirrorless line with the A7S Mark II. The original A7S could capture 4K video for external recording, and its relatively low resolution sensor was optimized for low-light capture. With the Mark II, Sony has improved these areas, now allowing the A7S II to record 4K video internally at 30 fps and 1080p HD video at an astounding 120 fps, excellent for slow-motion action footage at 1/4 speed.

Perhaps more impressive is the camera’s low light shooting capability. The native ISO range has been increased all the way up to 102400, plus “expanded” ISOs of 204800 and 409600. The (much older, higher resolution) Canon 5D Mark III, for example, has a top native ISO of 25600, two full stops below the Sony’s.

In addition to the improvements in ISO and Video, the A7S II has been equipped with Sony’s new in-camera 5-axis image stabilization system, giving video and still shooters smoother video and sharper images, even with non-stabilized lenses. The AF system has also been improved, with 169 autofocus points and increased speed and accuracy.

The camera will be available next month for around $3000.
