Just a month after Adobe announced a security vulnerability in their CS5 products and their, intention to do nothing about it, and the consequent public uproar, the digital publishing giant has released security patches for Photoshop CS5/5.1 and Illustrator 5/5.1. The free patch includes fixes for the previously known issues with compromised TIFF files, as well as vulnerabilities to two similar buffer-overflow attacks.
The security updates for PC and Mac can be downloaded directly from Adobe’s website, here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/security-update-photoshop.html
Now, those of you who are not convinced that CS6 is a worthwhile upgrade can continue to work under the illusion of safety. Keep in mind, though, that no matter how secure Photoshop is, you must also keep all of your other software up to date to maintain the lowest risk of malicious intrusions. Furthermore, all computer systems are susceptible to data loss as a result of hardware failure, so if your digital images are important to you, back them up! We recommend backups on separate hard drives, and ideally, on separate computer systems. If you shoot a modest number of photos each day, or have a fast internet connection, online backups are a great idea.
