The New Nikon D5100

Nikon unveiled the new D5100 today, a model that nestles nicely between the D7000 and the D3100. The D5100 shares utilizes the same 16 megapixel sensor as the D7000, so we can anticipate the same image quality and low noise. Furthermore, it appears that the D5100 bests the D7000 in some regards when it comes to video functionality.

Later today, I’ll post a more in-depth analysis of the Nikon D5100’s features and how they compare to existing Nikon models.

For the moment, though, a quick rundown of the highlights seems in order. As mentioned, the sensor is a 16 megapixel, with a native ISO range of 100-6400. The AF system uses 11 focusing points, an like the D7000 and D3100, can focus full-time while shooting video. Unlike the D7000, the D5100 can shoot 30fps at 1080p, though 60fps at 720p still seems to be missing. Externally, the most obvious feature is the appearance of a left-side-hinged LCD (as opposed to the bottom-hinged on the D5000).

Also announced was the new stereo video microphone, the Nikon ME-1, which mounts to the camera’s hot-shoe.

Oh, and the expected price is about $799 for the body… the same as the new Canon T3i.
